Spring 2006 Edition
Is school improvement an art or a science? At Success in Sight 2006: Learning, Leading, and the Future you'll discover that it is both. From June 14–16, 2006, in Denver, Colorado, Success in Sight 2006 will help school and district leaders utilize the research behind successful school improvement, as well as explore the complexities required to plan, implement, monitor, and maintain change.
Co-sponsored by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) and Teachscape, Success in Sight 2006: Learning, Leading, and the Future offers school leadership teams a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge to apply to their school improvement process. Interactive sessions introduce participants to McREL's research-based, comprehensive approach to school improvement, called "Success in Sight," which sets forth five essential stages that lead to student achievement:
- Stage 1: Take stock—Assess readiness and needs and examine goals
- Stage 2: Focus on the right solution—Use research and data to identify solutions and strategies; anticipate and manage the implications of change
- Stage 3: Take collective action—Create agreements and action plans among players; develop deep knowledge to accomplish goals
- Stage 4: Monitor and adjust—Use data to track implementation and student progress; celebrate success and change course as necessary
- Stage 5: Maintain momentum—Implement strategies to maintain current efforts and identify new opportunities for improvement
Four keynote experts deepen participants' understanding through explorations of critical school improvement themes:

Bob Marzano on what works in schools—A look at the school practices, teacher practices, and student characteristics that research has shown correlate with student achievement

Tim Waters on balanced leadership—Straightforward guidance for principals and superintendents on the leadership behaviors most strongly correlated with student achievement

Willard Daggett on megatrends of the future—A look at globalization, demographics, technology, and changing values and their impact on what students need to know and be able to do

Laura Lefkowits on keeping success in sight—An exploration of significant potential changes in our system of schooling and how education leaders can keep success in sight as they prepare for an uncertain future
